Volleyball Skills, Drills, and Thrills!

Welcome all 7th-10th graders to the GRS volleyball summer camp! Players will be able to practice and refine their volleyball skills through the guidance of Coach Chris Bock and Coach Mary Sollitto. With the Fall and Spring volleyball season approaching, players will be able to have the experience to play alongside some of the highschool TCA/GRS volleyball team. High School Advanced Ultimate

Do you play ultimate in high school and looking to get to that next level? If so, join us for this week of elite ultimate led by Scott Alsleben who has 20+ years of playing experience and 5+ years of coaching experience. You'll get a chance to improve on the basics but also take a deep dive into strategies by learning set plays, different styles of stacking, how to play a zone defense, and more. You'll also learn how to play Goaltimate, a fun, quick version of Ultimate. Take these skills back to your team to spread the love of this sport and the Spirit of the Game!

Sailing Team Training

Did you know that Great River School has a High School Sailing Team? Racing sailboats is an amazing sport that combines physical prowess, sharp thinking, strategic planning, teamwork, physics and psychology. This summer camp will teach you the fundamentals on harnessing the wind, controlling the sails, and steering the boat to navigate across the lake. You will learn how to tack and jibe, the points of sail, how to adjust the main and the jib, and how to steer using a tiller. Each day, you will have the opportunity to skipper, crew and swim. Campers will spend a couple days assisting on larger keelboats with younger campers and a couple of sailing in one of the small racing dinghies with a High School Sailing Team member. Drop off and pick up is at Bde Maka Ska near St. Louis Park.  For safety reasons, participants must be comfortable wearing a life jacket, being on the water and in a boat, and be able to follow group directions.  No sailing experiences necessary, but serious sailors only please

Printmaking

Ever wanted to learn how to do printmaking? In this introductory course we will learn how to make both relief prints and intaglio plexiglass prints in a variety of colors in addition to gelli plate prints using natural materials and acrylic paint. We will print on all sorts of things including paper, fabric, and tote bags. All students will leave with a single color block print, a muliti-color block print, an artist trading card and a self-designed tote bag. Wear clothes that can get dirty.

Rockin' on the River

This music camp (being offered 2 different weeks) is meant to give students a glimpse of what it's like to be in a band. Your camp leader, Chad, believes these components to be the most important in preparing someone to be a musician that plays shows: strong sense of tempo, learning forms of songs, improvisation, and listening to others. These skills will be the focus of our camp. We will also spend time studying the roots of American Music (Blues, Folk, Jazz, etc). Whether you are a singer, song writer, rhythm maker or player of instrument(s), you can have a spot in our band!

Painting of All Varieties

Learn how to paint! Ever wondered about the difference between types of paint? We will explore a different medium each day including: watercolor, gouache acrylic and oil paint. We will learn basic brush techniques for how to achieve different textures. No experience necessary. We will make a variety of landscapes, still lifes, portraits and imaginative paintings.

Ultimate for All

Great River School staff Scott Alsleben and Leona DeRango will once again be teaming up for a week of ultimate camp. This Ultimate Camp is available for all players, but we especially want to invite Female Matching Players to attend. Students in this camp will learn the basic rules of the sport, spirit of the game and the fundamentals of the sport including: throws, basic offense and defensive structure, gaining the experience of participating in a team sport, and having FUN while getting good exercise. FMP's will get a daily opportunity to break away from the rest of the group to scrimmage and/or work on skills in their own group.

Book and Paper Arts

Make a series of books! We will learn about folded books and hand sewn codexes. Make journals, sketchbooks, notepads etc. We will try out paper marbling to use as decorative endpapers in our books. Day 1: folded artists books. We will make accordion books and tunnel books. Day 2: Make decorative papers for our codexes. Gelli plate printing and paper marbling. Day 3: Codex journals. We will make traditional hardbound, hand sewn books. Day 4: Contemporary binding practices using unusual found materials.

If you're interested in being active in a variety of ways during the nicest time of year, come join us as we explore Como Park.  This will be an afternoon of sports, swimming at Como Pool, fishing and/or canoeing in Como Lake, exploring the woods, going on a bike ride, flying some kites, playing some games, enjoying s'mores around a campfire or anything else the group decides would be fun. Depending on each day's activity, students can bring their own equipment as well but not required.  This camp happens twice, but each week will be different.

Open Art Camp (Reimagined)

This year's camp is all about repurposing and upcycling. We'll travel by bus to a local thrift store, where you can choose clothing or a piece of furniture or some household items. I'll provide any necessary supplies to transform them to meet your designs. And, as always, if you have other art projects from home you'd like to bring in to work on, you're most welcome!
